Hello Spartan families,

We are excited to introduce a new elective for next school year: Digital Media & Broadcast Journalism!
This hands-on course gives students the opportunity to be part of a campus media team while learning the fundamentals of digital media, broadcasting, and publication production. Throughout the year, students will:
Produce a video newscast every 1–2 weeks
Create a weekly digital newsletter
Write scripts and cover school stories and events
Learn camera operation, audio and lighting techniques, and video editing
Explore media ethics, copyright, and effective communication skills
This course is ideal for students who are creative, enjoy technology, like working in teams, or are interested in careers such as journalism, marketing, film, broadcasting, public relations, or digital media. There are opportunities for both on-camera roles and behind-the-scenes production, including writing, editing, photography, and technical support.

Digital Media & Broadcast Journalism helps students build valuable real-world skills in communication, collaboration, leadership, and problem-solving — skills that are beneficial for both college and future careers.

If your student is interested in enrolling for next year, please have them contact their school counselor for more information. https://vghs.cguhsd.org/o/vghs/page/counseling

Thank you,

As we continue planning for next school year, we would like to inform you that a few elective courses still have space available. If your student is interested in adding or changing an elective, please review the options below and encourage them to connect with their school counselor as soon as possible.

Available Electives:

AP Seminar
AP Seminar is a college-level course that develops students’ skills in research, critical thinking, collaboration, academic writing, and public speaking. Students explore real-world issues, analyze multiple perspectives, and complete research-based projects and presentations. This course is an excellent opportunity for students who are preparing for college and want to strengthen their academic skills.

AP Computer Science Principles
Mr. Hernandez is currently seeking students interested in enrolling in AP Computer Science Principles. This course is ideal for students interested in coding or pursuing a technical field. Students begin by learning to build websites and then transition into studying computer networks, their history, and their social impact. The course culminates in students creating their own applications and/or games. Programming languages taught include HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and possibly Python.
For additional information, students may speak with Mr. Hernandez in Room 2009.

Mock Trial
Mock Trial is a hands-on elective where students learn about the legal system by participating in simulated court cases. Students take on roles as attorneys and witnesses, develop strong public speaking and argumentation skills, and compete against other schools. This course is a great fit for students interested in law, debate, or building confidence in communication.

If your student is interested in enrolling in any of these courses, please have them contact their school counselor as soon as possible so we can review their elective options.

Hello Senior Students and Parents,

We are excited to share that all local scholarship applications are now available, and many deadlines are quickly approaching. We strongly encourage seniors to begin applying as soon as possible. All applications and materials are attached to this email.

Local scholarships are one of the best opportunities for students to receive financial support for college, trade school, or other postsecondary plans. Unlike national scholarships, local scholarships often have fewer applicants, which means students have a greater chance of being selected. Even smaller awards can make a big difference by helping cover costs such as books, supplies, housing, or reducing the need for student loans.

Local Scholarship opportunities:
Zonata Young Women in Leadership Award - due February 14th
Arizona Farm & Ranch Legacy Scholarship - due February 15th
Kiwanis Scholarship - due March 4th
Rotary Scholarship - due March 6th
Cesar E Chavez Scholarship - due March 18th
Buffalo Solides & Troopers Scholarship - due March 25
PInal 40 Scholarship - due March 27

Please contact me if you have any questions at mkhan@cguhsd.org

Thank you,
Mia Khan
